Saturday night the Falcons will head to Detroit to take on the Lions (4-10) on a special edition of “Monday Night Football.” The game provides the Falcons an opportunity to display on national television they are indeed a legitimate contender. Despite last week’s dismantling of the defending Super Bowl Champion New York Giants, there are still plenty of people who do not think the Falcons are the team to beat in the NFC.
I of course, beg to differ. The win over the Giants was the statement I have been looking for the Falcons to make all season. After plenty of near-losses and a bad defeat at the hands of the Panthers, a lot of fans were ready to give up on the Birds. Which still amazes me seeming we’ve only lost two games this year!
Let’s get to this week’s game. The Detroit Lions present an interesting match-up with the Falcons in the passing game. I am looking forward to seeing how we defend the pass against the NFL’s leading receiver, Calvin Johnson. Assuming the Lions actually show up to play–unlike their pathetic showing against the Cardinals a week ago–I think this game will serve as a good opportunity for our pass-rushers and secondary to send a message to the rest of the league that we are a solid defense that can take the field against any top-level offense.
I fully expect our offense to put up big numbers against a dismal Detroit defense. With that being said, there are some things I would like to see cleaned up on the offensive side of the ball. The first being the running game. I would like to see us get Michael Turner going again, ala 2010, but It seems to me that we are heading toward the Jacquizz Rogers era in Atlanta. Another aspect of the offense I would like to see tuned-up heading into the post-season is the pass protection. Saturday night provides us with an opportunity to see how we stack up against one of the better interior pass-rushers in the league, Ndamukong Suh.
I look for us to win this game in convincing fashion and clinch home-field advantage while displaying our many capabilities on national T.V. Can’t wait ’til game time!!
Prediction: ATL 34- DET 16
