The Calm Before the Storm

Mike Smith, Thomas Dimitroff

So, it’s almost that time. The time when franchises are scuffling around, trying to decide which top-level free agents to pursue and which veterans to cut loose to allow for these fresh signings.

On Tuesday at 4 pm the free agency madness will kickoff. As Falcons fans, we should all be as excited as we are on Christmas Eve. This years’ free agency period could end up being an exciting one for the birds. ESPN has already reported that the Falcons are atop the list of possible suitors for former Rams running back Steven Jackson. So, what would a Steven Jackson bring to the table? First off, he is one of the most versatile backs in the entire league and aside from his age, he has nothing but upside. If the deal does go down and Jackson does indeed decide to suit up in the black and red, this will give the offense another explosive weapon and as Jackson noted on NFL Live, the Falcons may very well be one running back away from winning that elusive Lombardi trophy.
Turning to the defensive side of the ball, I am really looking for the Falcons to make a push to land former New York Giant defensive end Osi umenyiora, who would be an instant boost for the dismal pass rushing unit. Osi may be aged, but the other day on the NFL Network he told reporters that he WILL win defensive player of the year in 2013-14. Sounds promising to me!

Last but not least, I want to focus on two, maybe three, pivotal players of their own that the Falcons MUST reach out to and secure. Cornerback Brent Grimes, left tackle Sam Baker, and hopefully, depending on his retirement plans, Tony Gonzalez are all must-signs. These three players are crucial; maybe even more so than the free agents I had mentioned before. Each of these players played a key role in the Falcons recent success. I sure hope the guys in the front office can lure them back to the ATL.
